Barun Valley Makalu Trek is located in the eastern part of Nepal offering impressing natural scenery. The main focal point of this trek is Makalu Barun National Park and Conservation Area, which lies in the Solukhumbhu and Sankhuwasabha district, established in 1992 and formally inaugurated in 1992. Mount Makalu (8463m), the world’s fifth highest peak, Chamlang Himal and Barun Valley are the major jewels of this area.

Having a wide range of altitudinal and climatic variations, the Makalu Barun area offers a remarkable and diverse habitat for a rich variety of flora and fauna. Plants of all major ecological zones: tropical, sub-tropical, temperate, alpine and sub-alpine are found here. The park is the home to a rich variety of wildlife also.

The highlights of this rich natural paradise include beautiful mountains, pristine forest, and a wide variety of plants, animal life and the simple and warm hearted people local people with rich and varied.

Makalu Adventure Trek Itineary:

Day 01: On Arrival to Kathmandu Transfer To Hotel.

Day 02: Kathmandu to Tumlingtar
We will be taking an hour flight to the trading town of Tumlingtar, which lies in the Arun valley, from Kathmandu and will be meeting up with our trekking crew who will give us a short briefing about the journey ahead. We will be staying the night in Tumlingtar and make necessary preparation for the adventure ahead.

Day 03: Tumlingtar to Khandbari (1020m)
From Tumlingtar, we will be heading to Kumhalgaon and follow the trail that passes to the east. We will begin with a gradual ascent between the Arun Kosi and Sabha Khola observing the view of the huge Chhamlang massif and at the top of the ascent you will reach Dhunge Dhara. Proceeding onward, you will get to Khandbari where you will be spending the night.

Day 04: Khandbari to Chichila (1840m)
We will start off with a climb to Naya Bazaar, after which continue onwards to Mani Bhanjyang (1100m) and further climb through a bamboo forest along the ridge to Arun Than (1280m), and then transverses across the hillside, still climbing through fields and bamboo groves you will get to Sheka (1350m). As we continue climbing up, we will come to the Tamang village of Bhotebas (1740m) which offers a spectacular view of Chhamlang, Makalu and Jaljale Himal. From Bhotebas, we will proceed climbing uphill and will eventually reach Chichila where we will be staying for the night.

Day 05: Chichila to Num (1500m)
As we proceed onwards the ridge through the forest of rhododendrons, we will be passing through the small settlement of Baisake and Kuwapani (1870m) and eventually reach to Hururu (1970m). The route climbs and then drops down into the deep oak forest before arriving at Mure village (2000m) which inhabited by the Sherpas and Rais. The route then cuts across the ridge and makes a descend onto a rocky eroded trail to some stone steps and finally you will reach to Num where you will be spending the night. Num is situated on the ridge above an S- shaped bend in the Arun River.

Day 06: Num to Sedua (1540m)
The trail descends steeply through the fields of Lumbang and from here the trail gain latitude, through jungle to a suspension bridge over the Arun Kosi. From the bridge the trail climbs steeply through rice, corn and buckwheat fields and finally to Sedua where we will be spending the night.

Day 07: Sedua to Tashi Gaon
The trail climbs and then passes the National Park Forest Project and eventually reaches Manigaon. From Manigaon, we will be crossing seceral streams and the trail then veers off to the west and makes a gradual climb to Chyaksadanda and then to Ropesa. The route crosses meadows and several streams before coming to the Sherpa village of Tashi Gaon where we will be spending the night. It is a large village on the way to Makalu Base camp.

Day 08: Tashi Gaon to Khongma (3560m)
Today will be challenging as we will gain tremendous altitude.Climbing over the ridge and ascending through the forest you will reach Chipla (2520m). The route gets steeper and cuts through a forest before reaching a beautiful meadow at Unshisa. We will then pass through sparse vegetation before descending and reaching Khongma, a flat high altitude meadow. Overnight will be at Khongma.

Day 09: Khongma to Mumbuk (3550m)
From Khongma, you will be climbing up for most of the time and enjoying the beautiful views of Chhamlang peak 6 (6739m) and peak 7 (6105m). The trail climbs over a ridge to Ghungru La (4050m) and descends to a small lake and then climbs steeply up to Shipton La (4216m). You will then be descending to Keke La (4150m) and making a further descend through a forest of firs and onto Mumbuk where you will be spending the night.

Day 10: Mumbuk to Yangle Kharka (3600m)
From Mumbuk the trail descends down steeply and turns westward along the bottom of the Barun Valley, passing a small cave, crossing several streams, and finally cross the Barun River by a long bridge before reaching Yangle Kharka, a large meadow. Overnight will be at Yangle Kharka.

Day 11: Yangle Kharka to Yak kharka (4400m)
Our trail starts off climbing gently from Yangle Kharka passing through Nghe Kharka (3750m) which is a large open grassy field and proceed into the Arun Valley. The landscape is impressive and the cliff walls rise almost 2000m above the Arun river.Following the Arun valley you will pass Riphuk Kharka (3930m) and after making a short climb you will reach Jhak Kharka (4210m) and to the meadow of Yak Kharka (4400m). Overnight at Yak Kharka.

Day 12: Yak Kharka to Makalu Base Camp (5000meters)
We being our day with a climb over a ridge and then through a moraine formed by the Arun glacier. As we proceed further, the view gets more and more impressive and we will be able to see Chamlang, Peak lll and Peak V. The next village is Merek which sits on a precarious hillside. From Merek the trail follows through sandy scree alongside the morain towards the ridge and then the trail follows northward to the alluvial valley where the view of Optional walk on the ridge of Shersong is welcomed in order to get some good views.From Shersong, the trail climbs gradually to a minor pass and above Makalu Base Camp. You will have an excellent view of Makalu, Baruntse (7220m), Peak 6 and Peak 7 and the complete panorama of Everest and Lhotse. Please make sure you bring along your camera for this moment. We will be returning back to Shersong where we will be staying for the night. 13. Hike to Base Camp.

Day 13: Shersong to Yangle Kharka
We will be retracing our steps back to Yangle Kharka where we will be spending the night.

Day 14: Yangla Kharka to Mumbuk
We will continue with our decent through the forest of Mumbuk. We will be spending the night at Mumbuk.

Day 15: Mumbuk to Khongma
We will be re-crossing the Shipton la and continue with our descent to Khongma where we will be staying for the night.

Day 16: Khomgma to Tashi Gaon
We will be trekking back to Tashi Gaon where we will be spending the night.

Day 17: Tashi Gaon to Num
We will make a long and steep descend to Sedua before continuing the descent to the Arun Rive and the trail climbs before reaching Num where you will be spending the night.

Day 18: Num to Chichila
We will be trekking back to Chichila. Overnight at Chichila.

Day 19: Chichila to Mani Bhanjyang
We will be trekking back to Mani Bhanjyang. Overnight at Mani Bhanjyang.

Day 20: Manibhanjyang to Tumlingtar
We will be trekking back to Tumlingtar. Overnight at Tumlingtar.

Day 21: Tumlingtar to Kathmandu
Fly back to Kathmandu. Accommodation for the night will be in a hotel.
